At BlizzCon, I interviewed direct lighting artist Sean Murphy and Diablo IV lead systems designer David Kim. I asked them what makes Diablo IV distinct from its predecessor, and some questions about strategies for expansions and everyone tech, ray tracing. Diablo IV is touting itself as a dark game, but you have some limits on how violent you can buy. How do you find that balance?

We tried to not. We use dark, whether it's literal or dark as in, hey, you will find flayed blood and bodies throughout the tube and in the event that you got to the Domhain tunnels. We utilize that for effect. We utilize that for storyline. It robs it of its own power because if you do something like that over the place. That's sort of been our temperature estimate if this is reasonable for how we are playing out things like that.Lamia was a woman who became a child eater after her kids who were fathered by Zeus were murdered by Hera. A Catholic Bible that was once my grandmother's (printed by The Catholic Press, Inc. in 1950), uses the expression lamia in the same passage, to my surprise. It says,"And demons and monster shall fulfill, and the hairy ones shall cry out to one another, there hath the lamia lain down, and found rest for herself." So blood, lamia, witches, Lilith--they're all one in the same.

But the amount three are just areas of the mythology which appears to get inspired Diablo's Lilith, that can be laid out from the Book of Isaiah 34:14 and the remainder of Jewish folklore. Sanctuary is a reference to the Red Sea, after departing Adam from the Garden of Eden, where Lilith went. God sent the angels Senoy, Sansenoy, and Semangelof to bring Lilith back, and it requires a sacrifice of three to bring her back in Diablo. But Lilith did not want to leave the Red Sea, not because she was not pleased with Adam not treating her as his equal, but because she managed to birth hundreds of demon kids. This place was populated by her with her offspring, although she did not procreate using a fallen angel like Inarius.

The three angels were not happy about that, but still gave her a chance. She denied, but struck a deal with the angels: she would spare any human infant she came around one was born by that the three angels' symbols. The angels were OK for this, but God arranged that 100 of her demon children would die everyday. If she couldn't kill a child lilith mad, would sometimes kill her offspring.
